When arriving into the coastal city of Valparaiso, Chile, especially by boat, one can’t help but be struck but the vibrant colors of the buildings. Also known as the “Jewel of the Pacific”, the colors are electric – bold, colourful and unforgettable. As we approached via our cruise ship, the colourful buildings made their way from the shore line right up to the top of the surrounding hills. Everywhere you look you see vibrant colours.
Once we started to walk through the town, we began to notice that they lots of graffiti painted on the walls of the houses, factories, shops, etc. Murals three stories high! I made it a mission to find and photographic some of this fabulous art. But this proved to be tougher than I thought, as there were so many people appreciating the art and getting a clear shot to some time and patience. There are many streets that seem to have a focus on the graffiti, and it almost feels like you are walking through an art gallery. In areas like, Open Sky Museum of Bellavista Hill, Beethoven Alley at Concepción Hill and Gálvez Alley, you’ll find an explosion of color, creativity and a bohemian vibe.
This particular mural image struck me as I love the purple colours because they match a sofa in my home. And the intricate interweaving of faces, fish and wide variety of creatures of different colors – can you see them all?
