Morocco is a wonderful, beautiful and unique country and photographing "Goats in Trees" was an unexpected treat. When I was researching photographic topics in Morocco prior to our trip, I never came across goats climbing in trees as a topic. It wasn't until 2 days before I left, that a friend had mentioned this rare occurrence in the world. I actually did not believe her, but I told her if it did exist, I would photograph it. So, my personal challenge was on - find and photograph "goats in trees".

Upon arrival in Morocco and reviewing our travel plans with our driver, I asked - "have you ever heard of goats climbing in trees?". His answer was a resounding yes, and he promised that he would take me to them. So, they apparently exist. Sure enough, as we neared the city of Essaouira on Morocco's Atlantic coast my driver pulled off the highway and pointed to a field. I could not believe my eyes. This micro region in Morocco is home to the fabled "Argan Tree". The small green fruit of this tree is crushed, and the oils are used for many cosmetic products that are sold globally. The goats, however, love the fruit also, and after they forage the ground for all the fallen fruit, they then scurry up the tree to eat the fruit at the higher levels of the tree's branches. It truly is an incredible sight; their balance is superb!
I spent about 30 minutes taking numerous images of this strange almost surreal sight. I was grateful for a clear deep blue sky as it makes the goats stand out more in the image. The goats did not budge as I got closer, and you could see their ease of standing totally balanced on small narrow branches, what wonderful animals. When finished, I promptly tipped the goat herders, and went on my way. I had a huge smile on my face as I have now seen and photographed a little known and very strange sight, that I believe can only be seen in Morocco. A must see if you are ever in the area.
