This winter scene of a vineyard in Niagara on the Lake a small town near Niagara Falls, Ontario, was captured after a huge snowstorm, of wet snow. I was visiting family in Niagara-on-the-Lake one winter evening. Then the snow started, and boy did it come down. It was heavy and wet. It was getting late in the day and as the snow stopped, I knew I had only an hour or so to go out to a vineyard that had seen earlier in the day. With the wet snow, I knew it would be sticking to the vines and tree branches and thought that would make a great image.
I grabbed my photo gear and headed out driving extremely carefully because the roads were extremely slippery. I finally reached the location on the edge of the vineyard located near the Niagara River. The sun was disappearing quickly, and I had to move quickly so I began to take numerous shots. I was knee high in the snow and moved my gear to several locations. But very quickly the sun disappeared, and I knew that if I didn't have the shot, I wouldn't get it tonight. Thankfully when I got back and looked at the shots, I knew I had a couple would be great and were exactly what I was looking for. Converting to Black and White really gives the image the look I wanted. If you look carefully, you'll see netting on the vines. These nets are protective measures to keep the birds from attacking the "ice wine" grapes that are still on the vines, yet to be harvested. It was great evening playing in the snow.
